What is a Gastric Sleeve?

Gastric sleeve surgery, a key procedure for weight loss, involves reducing the stomach's size using a minimally invasive laparoscopic technique. This process facilitates significant weight loss, making it a highly sought-after option for combating obesity. Its popularity stems from the procedure's simplicity, low complication rates, and effectiveness as a weight loss solution.

Addressing obesity promptly is crucial due to its association with numerous health risks, including diabetes, hypertension, and heart conditions. For individuals struggling to achieve their ideal weight through traditional means like diet and exercise, gastric sleeve surgery presents a viable and safe alternative. Opting for this surgery at an esteemed clinic like Erdem Clinic not only paves the way for substantial weight reduction but also a leap towards a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle, positioning it as a premier choice for gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey.

Preparing for Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Turkey

Opting for gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey involves comprehensive pre-operative preparation to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the procedure. Recognised both nationally and internationally, obesity surgery associations have set specific standards that must be followed to optimise outcomes and minimise risks.

Health and Lifestyle Assessments

  • Smoking: Patients planning to undergo gastric sleeve surgery must consider the impact of smoking on their recovery. Smoking can adversely affect tissue healing, increase the risk of surgical complications, and intensify post-operative pain and coughing following general anaesthesia. It is strongly advised that patients quit smoking well before the operation to enhance their recovery process.

Nutritional and Physical Evaluations

  • Body Mass Index and Fat Analysis: Before gastric sleeve surgery, a detailed body analysis is conducted to determine the patient’s body mass index (BMI) and body fat ratio. This assessment helps in tailoring the pre-surgery diet and evaluating the patient's readiness for surgery.
  • Diet: The dietary regimen prior to gastric sleeve surgery should be high in protein and low in carbohydrates and fats, supplemented with fresh vegetables. It is important to balance the diet to avoid overly stringent restrictions that could affect the patient's psychological well-being. The diet should be customised based on the individual's eating habits and nutritional needs, ensuring they are physically prepared for the surgery.

Psychological Evaluation

  • Mental Health Screening: An essential aspect of the pre-surgery assessment involves evaluating the psychological state of the patient. This includes screening for any underlying psychiatric conditions, substance use, or addictions. A psychiatrist's evaluation is crucial and should influence the surgical plan, particularly if any mental health concerns are identified.

By adhering to these preparatory guidelines, patients can significantly improve their surgical outcomes. The cost of gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey is often more affordable compared to other countries, making it a sought-after destination for weight loss surgery. Patients are encouraged to fully engage in their preparatory process, from quitting smoking to adhering to nutritional guidelines, to ensure the best possible results from their gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey.

Post-Operative Care After Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Turkey

Recovering from gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey involves specific guidelines to ensure a smooth and effective healing process. Due to the minimally invasive nature of laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery, patients typically experience minimal pain, as the procedure does not involve cutting through the abdominal muscles or membranes. Pain relief is managed effectively with medications, allowing most patients to begin walking on the evening of their surgery and feel significantly better by the second day.

Essential Guidelines for Gastric Sleeve Post-Operative Care:

  • Diet: Initially, your diet will consist primarily of soft and liquid foods to ease the transition for your newly resized stomach. It's crucial to focus on nutrient-rich fluids and gradually reintroduce solid foods as recommended by your healthcare provider.
  • Nutrition: Ensuring adequate protein intake is vital for healing and maintaining muscle mass after weight loss surgery. Protein helps with tissue repair and can aid in the recovery process.
  • Eating Habits: Chew your food thoroughly to avoid complications such as blockages at the stomach outlet, which can lead to discomfort, pain, and vomiting. Aim to consume meals slowly, typically over a period of 45 minutes, although the initial goal post-surgery should be not to exceed 20 minutes per meal.

Activity Restrictions:

  • Avoid engaging in sexual activity for at least two weeks following surgery to prevent complications.
  • Driving is not recommended for one month post-surgery to ensure full recovery from anaesthesia and to avoid stress on the surgical site.
  • Alcohol consumption should be avoided for two months after surgery. If you choose to drink alcohol after this period, it should be done with a doctor’s approval.
  • Heavy lifting and strenuous physical activities should also be avoided for two months to allow your body adequate time to heal.
  • Vitamins and Supplements: It is important to take a multivitamin supplement, preferably in a dissolved or liquid form, as recommended by your doctor. This is crucial to prevent any nutritional deficiencies due to the reduced food intake and absorption post-surgery.

Following these guidelines will help ensure your recovery from gastric sleeve surgery is as comfortable and successful as possible. The cost of gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey is not only competitive but also includes comprehensive post-operative support, which is essential for achieving the best outcomes. If you're considering this life-changing weight loss surgery in Turkey, rest assured that you'll receive high-quality care tailored to your specific health needs.

Gastric Sleeve in Turkey FAQ

If you don't see an answer to your question, you can send us an email from our contact form.

You need to stay in Turkey for at least a week for bariatric surgery. This period may be longer depending on your general condition. However, since you will stay in the hospital for at least five days after surgery, your stay in Turkey is minimum one week.

You need to come to Turkey the day before the operation. During this period, the necessary preparations for the surgery are made more comfortably. However, depending on the situation, your arrival time in Turkey may vary. Some patients come here on the morning of the operation. You can make a decision about this by talking to your doctor.

After the procedure, which takes about 45 minutes, approximately 75-80% of the stomach is removed. Sleeve gastrectomy surgery helps to lose weight with 3 mechanisms. In this surgery, the patient’s postoperative appetite decreases because the fundus part of the stomach that secretes the appetite hormone (Ghrelin hormone) is completely removed.

As with all major surgeries, gastric sleeve surgery is a serious and risky procedure. However, in operations performed successfully by an experienced doctor, patients lose weight in a healthy way. Risks are also minimized.

You will not feel pain because the operation is performed under general anesthesia. You may have some pain on the first day after the operation. However, your doctor will give you painkillers. After the second day, you will not complain of pain.

Those with chronic diseases, alcohol and substance abuse problems, and psychological diseases are not suitable candidates for this surgery. Before the operation, some clinical tests are performed on the patients, and it is decided whether they are suitable for surgery. Your doctor will explain this decision to you along with the results he will obtain. If there is no problem, you set a date for surgery.

After this operation, you will lose weight very easily. However, if your eating habits become carbohydrate-heavy in the future, that is, if you do not have a healthy diet, you will gain weight again.

On the contrary, you will be healthier because you will get rid of your excess weight after this operation. Getting rid of the health problems that obesity will create allows you to have a longer life.

Excessive food consumption can result in pain and vomiting. Mashed meat, potatoes, and all kinds of fruit purees can be consumed. Again, care should be taken that they are low-calorie and fat-free. Consumption of carbonated drinks is strictly forbidden after surgery.

Obesity is a serious health problem around the world that adversely affects the health of the person and can lead to fatal consequences. In addition to the physical damages of obesity, it can also cause psychological problems in the person. A psychiatric examination is performed before the operation to determine whether these problems exist.

You will be accommodated in the hospital for the first three days after the operation. On the first day, you start walking. But the diet will be very different. The first day continues only in the form of liquid food, and then mash. Little by little, you switch to solid foods. But it takes time for you to switch to solid foods. However, you may feel some pain on the first day. However, your doctor will give you pain medications. This feeling of yours will pass in a short time. After the second day, you will not complain of pain. You can resume your daily activities one week after the operation.

All obesity surgeries performed by an experienced doctor are safe. For this reason, you need to be sure of the experience of the doctor who will perform your operation and the quality of the hospital.
